BEBRAS 2009

THE SIXTH BEBRAS CONTEST
November 11-13, 2009

This year is the sixth time pupils in Lithuania try to solve IT contest’s Bebras tasks.

The contest will be held on November 11-13th. On Wednesday, the first day of the contest, pupils from grades 11-12 will participate, on Thursday grades 9-10 and on the final day grades 5-8. Every age group will get 24 tasks: 8 hard (5 pts. each), 8 medium (4 pts.) and 8 easy (3 pts.).

There will be a practice session on November 2-8 for those schools that participate for the first time or want to make sure everything runs smoothly. During the practice teachers will be able to check if everything is well with the software and practice uploading pupils’ results with the Examination center system “Keltas”. If a problem emerges, teachers will have a chance to consult with the organizers. It is recommended for schools to participate in the practice session, so the contest runs smoothly.

Every year we get more and more feedback on pupils’ skills so we make note of it and try to improve the tasks. From the pool of tasks that are created during international Bebras workshop, the best are chosen by special experts committee. It should be noted that this year Lithuanian tasks will be the same as in Austria, Germany, The Netherlands and Poland so it will be possible to compare the results between these countries.

Every participant will get a certificate and the teachers will get a thank-you note. The best pupils will receive prizes and an awards and closing ceremony will be held. We hope for initiative from teachers, activity from participants, honesty and respect for others. If there are any questions, feel welcome to contact us at info@bebras.lt

BEAVERS RETURN TO PASVALYS ONCE AGAIN

Here came the time to prepare some tasks to the forthcoming Bebras competition. Teachers and professors from Lithuania and abroad gathered to the annual workshop with new attractive ideas. After previous year visit in Torun we sticked to our traditions and met in Balsiai mill (near Pasvalys). This year Bebras workshop was run in May 13-17. See the agenda...

We are glad that Bebras idea is causing an interest of foreign countries. This year the meeting was attended by representatives from 15 countries: Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine. Some of them decided to come and join the community even without their trip being funded.

Having about 200 preliminary tasks the participants of the workshop selected the most suitable ones for the competition. They were grouped, corrected and finally completed. For the opportunity to organize this meeting we are grateful to our general sponsor TEO, Pasvalys administration and Pasvalio Petro Vileišio gymnasium. Their contribution to teaching information technology in Lithuania is of great importance as collaboration with the specialists from abroad usually cause many good ideas.

Information technology contest Bebras is relatively young. We are still trying to improve it and hope that in the near future there will be opportunities to involve more pupils. Last year the competitions were organized in 9 countries with the involvement of more than 95 thousand pupils all together.
